"What are your ultimate career goals and aspirations" has got to be the dumbest scholarship question I've ever heard. One, it assumes that college is a path to a career. Two, having an ultimate career goal implies that your goals and ambitions will not change. Three ... if it's so ultimate, what do you do once you're there? Seppuku? "Hey guys, I've reached my ultimate goal, there's nothing left for me in life. See you in the next one!"

Ian, have you read any John Dewey?
I ask because he made essentially the same argument about ends as you just have: There are no true ends. Rather, people search after ends-in-view: a goal that they can reach which, once they have arrived, will provide them with more ends-in-view to strive after.
It's in his (Dewey's) Nature and Human Conduct. I highly suggest it.

Was this the Dewey of the Chicago Lab School? Mr. Decimal?
